Jordan’s Early Days in Baseball
Jordan was born in Brooklyn, New York on February 17th, 1963. His father, James Jordan, played college basketball for North Carolina State and then spent a year in the military before becoming a coach at a local high school. Jordan’s mother, Deloris, played basketball for Wake Forest and worked as an elementary school teacher. The Jordans moved frequently while he was growing up because of his father’s coaching job; they lived in Chatham, New Jersey; Wilmington, North Carolina; and later Springfield, Illinois. Jordan attended Lane Technical High School in Chicago, where he starred on the varsity basketball team. Michael Jordan Still Alive
He also played baseball and competed in track and field. In his sophomore year of high school, Jordan injured his back while playing baseball and was advised not to play sports again. However, he decided to try out for the varsity basketball team and made the cut despite not being 100% healed. In his first game after returning from injury, Lane Tech lost by 40 points to DePaul University. Despite this early setback, Jordan continued to work hard on his game and improved dramatically over the next few years. He led Lane Tech to two state championships (in 1980 and 1981) as a junior and senior player and was named Illinois Mr. Basketball as a senior in 1981.
